Following the Ukrainian crisis in 2014, the Japanese photographer Yoshie Itasaka (b. 1984) traveled through Ukraine for over five years, capturing everyday situations in Odessa, Kiev, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhia, Mariupol, and Crimea, among other places. This publication invites us to see Ukraine’s recent history anew through the empathetic lens of a Japanese perspective. With her very personal travel diary, Itasaka aims to convey an understanding of the history of the post-Soviet era in this region. Infinity Complex Landscape calls for a confrontation with the past and contributes to the healing of collective wounds. The book includes a text by professor Kimitaka Matsuzato, one of the leading scholars of Post-Soviet History and Politics, who, in 2019, received the Association for the Study of Nationalities’ (ASN) prestigious Huttenbach Prize.

Yoshie Itasaka (b. 1984) is a Japanese photographer whose work centers on war, memory, and post-conflict societies. She has carried out long-term projects across Ukraine, the Balkans, Israel and Palestine, as well as other regions marked by contested historical narratives.
